Wonder Wood Although futuristic designs of the 60s and 70s are garnering much of the media attention of late and seem to currently have more "star" power, wood (especially of the darker variety) seems to be enjoying a resurgence and headed for an even stronger comeback. Even collectors of the more radical space-age designs are themselves joining ranks with other collectors in picking up prime examples. One possible reason for the switch: these wooden wonders, while maintaining a clean modern look, bring a certain warmth into the home that is not usually associated with plastic pop designs. In many instances vintage pieces can be found for substantially less than you would pay for a new set of equivalent quality, and the choices are certainly more interesting. Take the examples presented here. The top image pictures Richard Schultz Petal Table Collection of 1960, gorgeous enough to be used indoors or outdoors, and recently reintroduced by the original designer. The collection was originally designed for Knoll to complement the popular Bertoia wire chair collection, the side chair shown here in white. While the designer of the unusual wire and canvas lounge chair set is unknown, the style certainly captures our fancy. As with the buying of any design object, let your eye be your guide when selecting the right patio set for your home, and don't let the lack of a designer name stop you from buying something that you'd love to live with.
