GOMOD
...bringing modern design home
GOMOD is a portal
to modern design on (and off) the Web. First launched in 1998, GOMOD was one of
only a handful of sites at that time devoted to the subject. Founded in part on
the premise that information about modern design was difficult to find on the
Web, we hoped to "bring modern design home" as our tagline conveys.
It began as a part-time project, which over the past few years, has exploded to
what currently has become a full-time job for myself and a part-time job to a
handful of trusted consultants that work with me in different phases of site
planning, sales, programming and design. We have gone through several major
design changes reflected in the images to the left. After the implementation of
our last version, which was more of a magazine type layout, we saw a ten-fold
increase in traffic in less than a six-month period. As a member of the Object
Culture Network, an emerging group of specialized collector sites, we hope to
expand our offerings and services that we provide our many site visitors

| Our Past |
 |
GOMOD began as a website called ModCity, but with the modcity.com domain taken
we opted for gomod.com. It was to be a site to sell overflow from several years
of collecting modernism. Lots of kitsch and a few classics filled the garage,
attic, a few storage units and soon found themselves for sale on the site. At
that time there were only a few websites dealing with modern design, most
notably Deco Echoes, Joe's Cool Website and retromodern. There were only a
handful of items on eBay at that time to tempt a modern collector...now
surprisingly, this was only a bit over three years ago. How times have changed!
I found it very difficult to locate any information on modernism on the Web
without involving and inordinate amount of searching. My idea was to create a
shopping experience that also provided information; a marketplace of modernism
of sorts.
Well, the site was successful in that we built a very loyal and large base of
regular visitors and received quite a bit of unsolicited press. We also sold
quite a bit of merchandise but as the collection whittled down thoughts turned
to what would become of the site after we sold all of our "stuff."
With the heavy traffic volume we received we began linking sites that we
designed and also sites that were interested in receiving additional traffic.
From that point we have developed more into a resource for buyers and a place
for sellers to market their items...the marketplace idea had become a reality.

| What's Happening Today |
 |
With the above experiences behind us and seeing the demand for a more
informative and entertaining shopping experience we decided to take a very long
break and have spent quite an extensive amount of time and effort toward the
refining of our site features and design and the expansion of our site
offerings. What you are viewing today is the first phase in our attempt to
deliver our idea of a "modern marketplace." We hope that you find it
as fun as it is informative and that you will help us add to the content
through participation in our message boards, auctions, classified ads, links
directory and other interactive features. We have tried to make the site
dynamic so that you, the visitor, can help to shape the future direction of the
site.
We have taken the marketplace idea one step further and have begun to apply it
to other niche collector markets. Our marketplace for vintage clothing,
FashionDig.com, has met with a huge initial response. We are currently
developing our next collector marketplace site, MissionStyle.com, which will
feature Arts & Crafts collectibles and Mission Furnishings.

| In Our Future |
 |
The creation of the Object Culture Network is the beginning of our building for
the future. We plan on launching a new collector marketplace approximately
every three to four months. In addition to providing an arena in which buyers
and sellers share information, we also will be providing a full range of
consulting services for businesses involved in antiques, collectibles, fashion,
design and the Arts. We can help businesses plan and design their online
presence, assist or completely control the maintenance and hosting of your
site, achieve better and quicker search engine placement for you after the site
is launched, provide targeted traffic through our own collector marketplaces,
and refer you to our select partners that can assist in other important matters
to small businesses including print design services, legal services, and
accounting. |
